Maternity services: evidence to support improvement

For the great majority, pregnancy and childbirth is a positive and happy experience that culminates in a healthy mother and baby. But on the rare occasions when things go wrong, the effects are devastating.

 

Maternity services have unfortunately seen examples of major failings, and a recent report from Sands and Tommy’s has warned about overstretched services. The recent NHSE Maternity Delivery plan encourages NHS Trusts to take action.

 

A new Collection from NIHR Evidence addresses some of the issues in maternity services and provides examples of how research could drive  improvement across four areas:

  1. Kind and compassionate care
  2. Teamwork with common purpose
  3. Identifying poor performance
  4. Organisational oversight
