Professional organisations

BAPM (British Association of Perinatal Medicine)

Aims to support newborn babies and their families by providing services that help all those involved in perinatal practice to improve the standards of perinatal care in the British Isles.

Partnered with BMFMS in organising perinatal 2008 and Perinatal Medicine 2011 which attracted record numbers. Bill Martin is the BMFMS representative on the BAPM executive committee and BAPM are represented on the BMFMS executive committee by Mandy Ogilvie-Stuart. We are aiming to partner again in 2014.

British Association of Paediatric Surgeons

The primary aim of BAPS is to set the standards of care of paediatric surgical practice in the UK and Ireland.

EAPM (European Association of Perinatal Medicine)

The purpose of the Association is to bring together groups and individuals in a European organisation in order to promote the science of perinatal medicine for the benefit of a high level of physical and mental health for women, mothers and their children in Europe. BMFMS president Professor Steve Robson is a member of the scientific committee.

EBCOG (European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Aims to coordinate the work of the national societies of obstetricians and gynaecologists within European countries. Its objective is: ‘to improve the health of women and their babies by promoting the highest possible standards of care in all European countries.’ EBCOG seeks to meet this objective by facilitating understanding of services, education and clinical effectiveness amongst individual European countries.

MOMS (MacDonald UK Obstetric Medicine Society)

MOMS is designed to support doctors, both physicians and obstetricians, who are interested in specialising in the rapidly expanding sub-speciality of Obstetric or Maternal Medicine. Neonatal Nurses Association

The NNA is a professional organisation that brings together nurses working in the neonatal field. It aims to establish and promote good standards of neonatal nursing for the benefit of the babies, their families and the nurses involved in their care. The NNA was a partner in the perinatal medicine conferences in 2008 and 2011.

Obstetric Anaesthetists Association

The OAA aims to promote the highest standards of anaesthetic practice in the care of mother and baby and has an international membership of over 2000. It provides both education and training for anaesthetists and other practitioners in the UK and overseas and a resource for women seeking information about pain relief in labour and anaesthesia for Caesarean section.

Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG)

The RCOG encourages the study and advancement of the science and practice of obstetrics and gynaecology through postgraduate medical education and training development, the publication of clinical guidelines and reports on aspects of the specialty and service provision. The RCOG International Office works with other international organisations to help lower maternal morbidity and mortality in under-resourced countries. BMFMS have strong links with the RCOG and provide input into a number of RCOG committees.

Action Medical Research

Medical Research Council (MRC)

A publicly-funded organisation dedicated to improving human health. They support research across the entire spectrum of medical sciences, in universities and hospitals, in their own units and institutes in the UK, and in their units in Africa. National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU)

A multidisciplinary research team dedicated to improving the care provided to women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, as well as the care provided to the newborn. Home to UKOSS the UK obstetric surveillance system which aims to develop a UK-wide Obstetric Surveillance System to describe the epidemiology of a variety of uncommon disorders of pregnancy.

National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN)

Supports clinical research and helps to facilitate the conduct of trials and other well-designed studies within the NHS. The NIHR Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN) has four networks that comprise the UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN).

Action on Pre-Eclampsia (APEC)

Helps and supports women who have had or are worried about pre-eclampsia, pregnancy induced hypertension or HELLP Syndrome.

AEPU (Association of Early Pregnancy Units)

CLAPA (The cleft lip and palate association)

CLAPA is the representative organisation for all people with and affected by cleft lip and/or palate in the UK.

CLAPA provides support and information to new parents, specialized bottles and teats for babies, activities for children and young people, advice on accessing treatment for adults, and volunteering opportunities through their branches.
