Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch’s (HSIB’s) maternity programme will be hosted later this year by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)

13 April 2023

It has been announced via a Written Ministerial Statement that the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch’s (HSIB’s) maternity programme will be hosted later this year by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The new arrangement with the CQC will enable high-quality independent family focussed maternity investigations to continue and it will maintain the independence of maternity investigations within the NHS.

The new hosting arrangements will come into force in October as the HSIB becomes a Non- Departmental Public Body established under the Health and Care Act 2022, called the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB).

HSIB believe this is an excellent opportunity for their maternity programme, particularly as they have been assured that their investigations will remain independent, family focused and they will continue to provide learning to the health system at a local, regional and national level.  They remain in a position of providing independent investigations, whilst the CQC continues with its regulatory function.
