Conference 2009 Liverpool

Liverpool provided the venue for the 2009, 13th Annual Conference which was held in the newly opened BT Convention Centre part of the rejuvenated Liverpool Waterfront. We had 414 delegates with an overall attendance including speakers and exhibitors of nearly 500 people. Feedback from conference was again excellent. In particular delegates commented on the good mix of clinical and scientific abstract presentations.

Key note speakers included
Professor YM Dennis Lo- Non-invasive pre-implantation diagnosis
Miss HK Dhillon- Outcome of prenatally detected renal anomalies
Professor JS Mercer- Controversies in the Third Stage
Professor Marc Rodgers- Thrombophilias in Pregnancy

Hot topic sessions returned with diverse subjects such as adult congenital heart disease and mode of delivery of twins. These were well received as were the Meet the Experts sessions which have become a regular feature of conference.

Conference 2009 saw an attempt increase links with the academic and specialist midwifery communities. Professor’s Tina Lavender and Jane Sandall co-opted onto the BMFMS conference organising committee and midwifery involvement in conference increased both in the form of abstract applications and presentations.

The debate on ‘There is no place for stand alone midwifery-led units’ saw the revitalisation of old rivalries with the pitting of Professor Denis Walsh, associate professor of midwifery (against the motion), and Professor James Walker (for the motion).

The society dinner was held in the grand surroundings of St Georges Hall in Liverpool city centre and was a packed event which provided the opportunity for much socialising.
