Professor Lucilla Poston of Kings College London has been Chair of the maternal medicine CSG since its inception. The CSG has 9 clinical advisers and 10 executive members. A relatively new CSG the maternal medicine CSC held its first meeting in May 2010. Meetings are held every 3-4 months. Minutes are available via the RCOG web-site.

The Maternal Medicine-CSG aims to

  • To develop and oversee an approved portfolio of studies in Maternal Medicine
  • To propose and develop well designed studies including trials
  • To consider studies proposed by members of the group and others
  • To provide specific advice to investigators
  • To ensure consumer involvement

The most high profile studies which the maternal medicine CSG has provided input into are the PITCH study (a study which will combine investigate two approaches to the management of obstetric cholestasis i.e. 1) Ursodeoxycholic acid vs placebo 2) Early vs delayed delivery) and the STAMP study (an RCT of Provastatin in women with early onset pre-eclampsia). Both are aiming for HTA funding.

Outline proposals which are currently being developed include

- A trial of Calcium and Aspirin for prevention of pre-eclampsia

- Soluble flt-1, PIGF in the diagnosis of Pre-eclampsia
